Technology should be used much more often in cricket…

The Chennai Super Kings (CSK) star Faf du Plessis has called for more use of technology after the thrilling game of cricket between the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) and Mumbai Indians (MI) ended on a controversial note. Chasing 188, the RCB needed 17 runs off the final over bowled by the veteran Lasith Malinga. The equation finally came down to 7 off the last ball. However, Malinga showed his vast experience by bowling a dot ball and firing his team to a 6-run win.

But as soon as the umpires signalled the end of the game, the television replays showed that Malinga had overstepped which meant it was a no-ball. However, umpire S Ravi made a blunder by completely missing it. The right call would have very much made a huge difference in the game. Had the umpire called it a no ball, Shivam Dube would have surely gone for a single which would have brought AB de Villiers, who was batting on 70, at the striker’s end. The equation then would’ve come down to five runs off the last ball.

But the game of cricket does not dwell on if and buts as the RCB paid the price for the umpiring howler. Following the game, there was criticism from all around for such a big blunder and Faf du Plessis also weighed in with his views. The South Africa captain took to Twitter to state that more use of technology is the need of the hour.

“Technology should be used much more often in cricket … so many front foot no-balls missed all the time in all formats and only checked on dismissal. Should be as simple as 3rd umpire telling the umpire through ear piece that a no ball has been bowled,” his tweet read.

Kohli vents his frustration

A furious Virat Kohli showed no mercy to the umpires as he came down hard on them for missing the no-ball. The Royal Challengers skipper called the call ridiculous as he criticised the umpires. “We are playing at the IPL level and not playing club cricket. The umpires should have had their eyes open. That is a ridiculous call at the last ball. If it is a game of margins, I don’t know what is happening. They should have been more sharp and careful out there,” said Kohli.
